Colorado’s high country is enjoying healthy dose of powder today while the weekend winter storm is expected to spare the metro area, for the most part.

The northern mountains, including much of Summit County and the Winter Park area, was hit with 4 to 5 inches of fresh snow today and should receive a few more inches throughout the night, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold front is expected to come through the plains overnight and dump an inch or two of snow in the Denver metro area. It should clear out by Sunday morning at 9.

“It’s kind of a quick hit-and-run storm,” said Todd Dankers, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Temperatures for Valentine’s Day are expected to reach the upper 20s and lower 30s in the Denver area and upper teens and 20s in the high country.

“Tomorrow should be a pretty beautiful day,” Dankers said.

Scattered snow showers could also hit the metro area on Presidents Day, although little accumulation is expected.
