GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Background checks for firearms in Colorado were up last year.

The Instacheck Unit of the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, which handles statewide background checks for firearms, approved 202,613 background checks in 2009, up from 196,980 in 2008.

Firearm and ammunition sales spiked nationwide last year, sparked partly by fears that President Barack Obama and a Democrat controlled Congress would enact antigun legislation. The increase continued during Obama’s first months in office even though nothing was proposed.
