SEATTLE — The body of a climber who fell into the crater atop Mount St. Helens has been recovered, officials said.

Joseph Bohlig, 52, of Kelso, Wash., had taken off his backpack and a layer of clothing to pose for pictures with his climbing partner Monday when snow gave way and he fell 1,500 feet.

He was able to blow a whistle after he fell, but foul weather hampered rescue efforts. Overnight temperatures were in the 20s.
