Lauryn Bruggink is the only girl to qualify for the state wrestling tournament twice. Now, she’s the first to score a victory.

The Soroco sophomore’s 33-second pinfall of Custer County’s Cameron Ham in the opening round of consolations was the first of its kind in Colorado history.

But it was not the only one. Just minutes later Meeker’s Cody Phau, one of three girls to make this year’s tournament along with Byers’ Areil Oster, pinned Julio Maldonado of Center in 2 minutes, 31 seconds.

Officials of the state tournament have not allowed the media to speak with the girls and won’t make them available until after the tournament.

Bruggink followed her first victory with a second one, a 9-5 decision over Jared Airola of Nederland, putting her one win away from placing. If she wins her consolation quarterfinal this morning, she would do no worse than sixth place, which would earn her a spot on the podium.

Phau was ousted from the field with a pinfall loss in the second round of consolations.
