With all the snow that’s fallen in recent weeks, much of the country could stand to put down the shovels, get out of the house and have a relaxing glass of wine.
Two of those to-do items can be handily resolved by a $4.99 iPhone app called TastingRoom Finder. As its name implies, TastingRoom will help you find a place to try out wines, presumably local, often on a vineyard’s grounds. It claims to list 3,182 wineries.
The app, developed by World of Wine Events, is easy to understand: Tap “find a tasting room” and you have a choice of listings ordered by name, state or “nearest.” Nearest gives you a choice of a search in a 5- to 100-mile radius. Some users have found the addresses to be off, so you might use the one-touch dialer to call and confirm.
The app has notepads where you can log your favorite tasting rooms and make tasting notes. There also is a primer on grape varieties, if your palate alone isn’t doing the job. Roy Furchgott
