A Colorado Springs man called “Fat Boy,” who is suspected in beating a homeless person the day after Christmas, bolted from police Friday afternoon and locked himself in the bathroom of a nearby business before giving up, police said.
Matthew Vincent Hawley, 23, also is an unregistered sex offender stemming from a guilty plea in El Paso County in January 2009. His record also arrests on drug charges, cruelty to animals and contempt of court.
Numerous witnesses to the Dec. 26 beating identified the attacker by his street name, according to police. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Vice, Narcotics, and Intelligence Unit had information from an informant that Hawley was staying at a residence in the 3700 block of Rebecca Lane, according to arrest information.
“Detectives were familiar with ‘Fat Boy’ from previous arrests,” according to the Colorado Springs police blotter.
