ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen officials are considering requiring residents to have bear-proof garbage containers.

The Aspen City Council plans to vote on the proposed ordinance in the next few weeks. Officials are considering the idea a year after residents reported frequent bear encounters. Aspen police say 600 residents reported seeing bears last year.

The proposal would make it mandatory for residents to have wildlife-resistant containers. Currently, residents can leave unsecured garbage bins outside their homes on trash pick-up day. The proposal would also limit the number of hours the containers could be outside.
