Denver police Detective John Haney is running for the Denver City Council seat that has been represented by Councilman Rick Garcia.
The District 1 seat, which represents northwest Denver, is becoming vacant because Garcia is leaving to become a regional director in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Haney, 56, and his wife, Kathy, own Haney’s Coffee Shop, 3814 Lowell Blvd. In a news release announcing his candidacy, Haney said he was born and raised in north Denver, along with 10 brothers and sisters. His three brothers also went into law enforcement as police officers.
The special, all-mail ballot election will take place May 4.
