WESTMINSTER — Kristen Ward’s 16 points and 13 from Courtney Tyus pushed the Mustangs past the Golden Eagles in the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball playoffs Wednesday.
Ward made 10-of-11 free throws as Mountain Range, a No. 10 seed, improved to 13-11. Next test: at Central (G.J.) and top-flight guard Amy Kame in the second round Saturday.
Lena Jaycox and Ali Staj- duhar each scored 10 points for seventh-seeded Mountain Vista, which ended 12-12.
Grandview 57, Chatfield 33
AURORA — Adaeze Obinnah’s 16 points led the Wolves to a win over the Chargers in 5A’s first round.
Jessica O’Dorisio (15 points) and Nicolette Halbleib (10) also paced Grandview, a seventh seed, which moved to 13-11 and next plays defending state champion Regis Jesuit on Saturday.
Green Mountain 61, George Washington 47
LAKEWOOD — The Rams ran to a 22-10, first-quarter lead in downing the Patriots in the first round of 5A.
Erin Andersen (14 points) and Emily Canady (12) paced Green Mountain (15-9), which plays at ThunderRidge on Saturday.
Jaynelle Johnson’s 11 points led the Patriots, who finished 15-9.
Fairview 53, Smoky Hill 25
BOULDER — The Knights built a 29-5 halftime lead in humbling the Buffaloes in 5A’s opening round.
Ten players scored for Fairview, topped by Casey Thayer’s 20 points. Fairview plays at Palmer on Friday.
Smoky Hill finished 6-18.
Horizon 68, Rampart 62
THORNTON — Casey Bollinger’s 19 points lifted the Hawks (12-11) over the Rams (8-16) in 5A’s first round for a Saturday date at Denver Prep League champion East.
