ASPEN, Colo.—Officials in Aspen and Durango are considering steps to keep trash out of the reach of bears and reduce bear-human encounters.
The Aspen City Council plans to vote in the next few weeks on an ordinance requiring residents to have wildlife-resistant trash containers and limit the number of hours the containers can be outside.
Aspen police say 600 residents reported seeing bears last year.
The Durango City Council is considering an ordinance making it illegal to leave trash cans on the curb overnight.
A group called Bear Smart says residents in La Plata County, which includes Durango, reported nearly 1,300 bear sightings or other bear-related incidents in 2007. There were 228 in 2008 and 627 last year.
