DURANGO, Colo.—A Durango school has been temporarily closed as a precaution while heavy snow is shoveled from the roof.

Durango School District 9-R decided to call off classes Thursday at Miller Middle School because the snow buildup is heavier than normal.

Classes could resume as early as Friday.

The cafeteria at Durango’s Needham Elementary School has been closed indefinitely because a load-bearing beam splintered, but it wasn’t immediately clear if heavy snow was the cause.

School officials say they’ll make temporary repairs until a permanent fix can be made this summer.

Durango School Superintendent Keith Owen says school children were not in any danger.
