Bernie Madoff’s former operations chief was charged Thursday with helping his boss run a Ponzi scheme that bilked investors and illegally infused $750 million into parts of the business that Madoff insisted was legitimate.
Daniel Bonventre, 63, became the sixth person charged in the largest U.S. Ponzi scheme. Prosecutors and regulators said he was a key aide to Frank DiPascali, the Madoff lieutenant who is helping the government unravel a fraud that cost investors as much as $65 billion.
Bonventre, who faces up to 77 years in prison, was released on a $5 million bond.
