KEYSTONE — Parents know that when the kids are happy and busy on vacation, everyone’s happy. With that in mind, Keystone Resort this season is trying out a new program called “Kidtopia,” aimed at giving the younger set even more to do along with skiing and snowboarding.

Kidtopia got its most visible boost last weekend with the completion of its colossal snow fort at the top of Dercum Mountain, near the tubing hill. Designed to look like a castle, the fort was an instant hit with kids, who busily set to work exploring the hidey-holes, slides and other features within its 12-foot walls.

The fort is open until the end of the ski season.

Also ongoing for Kidtopia are daily activities like face-painting and crafts, as well as special events like a Saturday night BBQ, “disco” tubing on Thursdays and two more special weeks with extra activities March 15-21 and April 1-6.

“The idea is to set Keystone apart as far as a family-friendly destination,” said resort spokesman Ryan Whaley. “It’s a bonus for families, and next year we’ll be looking at adding even more things.”
