SHELBY, Neb.—Shelby residents are fired up to see one of their own competing at the Olympic games.

Curt Tomasevicz is on the four-man bobsled team that won gold Saturday. It’s the first gold for the U.S. in sliding’s signature race since 1948.

Before the win, many in this small town were already calling Tomasevicz a hero.

Resident George Thelen says its makes everyone in Shelby feel good to see Tomasevicz at the Olympics.

The 29-year-old was a high school football star in Shelby. He went on to play for Nebraska from 2000 to 2003 and started bobsledding after that.

His former high school football coach, Jerald Humlicek, says Tomasevicz has a great passion for bobsled that drives him to succeed.

Tomasevicz competed at the 2006 Olympics, but failed to medal.
