LeBron James is leaving Michael Jordan and joining Dr. J and Bill Russell. But only out of respect for MJ.
James filed paperwork to change his uniform number next season from Jordan’s No. 23 to No. 6 — Julius Erving’s and Russell’s number in the NBA — the league confirmed with The Associated Press on Tuesday. James said earlier this season he would be willing to give up No. 23 in an effort to have the NBA retire it in honor of Jordan.
Cavs fans are hoping this is a sign he plans to stay with the team. James, who can become a free agent this summer, only needs the NBA’s approval to change numbers if he stays in Cleveland.
But Cavs coach Mike Brown brought it back to MJ.
“All it does is back up LeBron’s beliefs,” Brown said. “He’s a loyalty guy. When he believes in something, he sticks to his guns and he believes wholeheartedly in what he’s doing.”
