COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A teenager who saved two children from an icy lake in Colorado Springs is being hailed as a hero.
Authorities say 19-year-old Welvin Washington saw a 7-year-old and an 11-year-old struggling in Prospect Lake in Memorial Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Washington waded into open water, swam to the kids about 50 feet from shore and hoisted them to solid ice. The kids were taken to a hospital for evaluation but weren’t seriously hurt.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department has nominated Washington for a heroism award.
