A Colorado Springs man rescued two children who had fallen through thin ice into a lake.
The rescue happened around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday at Prospect Lake, according to a media release from the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The two children, ages 7 and ll, were saved by Welvin Washington, who was walking by the lake.
Washington swam to the children and helped each one, one at a time, up back on to the ice and safety.
The children were treated and warmed at the scene by paramedics and taken to Memorial Hospital to be evaluated, the media release said.
The fire department described the rescue as “heroic.”
“Mr. Washington saved the lives of two children who, most certainly, would not have made it out of the water on their own,” the fire department said.
Washington has been nominated by the fire department for its Citizen Heroism Award.
With temperatures on the rise after a long cold spell the fire department warns the public about the dangers of venturing on to iced-over bodies of water.
