A speeding driver was killed about 2:44 a.m. today on westbound U.S. 6 above the Colorado School of Mines football field in Golden.
Jeff Hesalroad, spokesman for the Golden Police Department, said the driver was going approximately 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control of his car and slammed into a guard rail.
The impact sent the small car across the highway and up an embankment, where it tipped on its side, said Hesalroad.
The location is just below the mountain used by hang gliders, said Hesalroad.
Hesalroad said alcohol and drugs are being investigated as possible contributing factors to the accident.
The name of the driver is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
