LOUISVILLE, Colo.—A Louisville high school teacher accused of hitting a student and punishing others by making them do push-ups is on paid leave after police ticketed him.

Monarch High School band teacher Kent Jones told the Boulder Daily Camera he “twapped” the student in the back of the head like his father used to do to him and that he didn’t mean to hurt the student. Jones pleaded not guilty this week to a misdemeanor harassment charge.

The Boulder Valley School District says it will conduct its own investigation after the legal case is resolved.

Students told police Jones calls the class “lazy, dumb and unmotivated” and that he makes them do push-ups. One student says he wants to quit band class, while another says the class is stressful because Jones constantly yells at students.
