BUENA VISTA, Colo.—A boot camp for juvenile offenders in southern Colorado is preparing to close because of budget cuts.

Buena Vista Correctional Facility is planning to close June 30. Gov. Bill Ritter recommended last month the camp be closed to save almost $1 million, and lawmakers have cut its funding.

The camp has been open since 1991 and currently houses 79 offenders. Prison officials say there is room for those offenders elsewhere and that no corrections jobs will be lost because of the closure.

Prison officials say the closure may not be permanent.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti told The Pueblo Chieftain that the boot camp showed only slightly improved retention rates over traditional detention.
