Knitting freebies. On Sunday the Congress Park yarn store Lambe Shoppe (3512 East 12th Ave.) hosts its first-ever “Needles and Accessories Swap.” Thrifty knitters and crocheters are advised to go through their stash of unused materials — “You know, . . . that fabulous yarn you’ve been looking at for eons and are never going to make anything with” — in order to swap with other hobbyists. The event is from 9 a.m. until noon; doors open at 8:45 a.m. You must be present with your stuff and negotiate directly with other knitting and crocheting aficionados. Call 303-322-2223 to reserve a spot.

time & space

Go-to decorating advice. What’s true in life can be true when it comes to outfitting your home, according to Pennsylvania interior designer Donna Hoffman (), who believes that a beautiful home enables the people living there to function and feel better. Among her tried-and-true design strategies:

Slow and steady wins the race. Don’t feel like your home needs to come together in one fell swoop. It’s better to finish one room completely than to spritz budget dollars and energy in 10 directions.

You get what you pay for. Cheapest is not always the smartest way to go in home furnishings. Cheapest will always be the most cheaply made, cheaply designed, cheaply executed and cheaply built.

Don’t buy suits. End tables and coffee tables need not be matchy-matchy. If you want a look that rivals something in a design magazine, let there be conversation between your case goods, not duplication. . . . If you have the matchy-matchy thing happening, you can easily fix the problem. Start breaking up the marriage by separating matched pieces by relocating one “twin” into an alternate space.
