Rep. Terrance Carroll, the first black speaker of the state House, tonight will receive the Colorado Democrat of the Year award at the party’s annual fundraising dinner.

“It’s always a great time,” Carroll said, “but this is going to be special. I’m really humbled to get this award.”

The Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner will be held at the downtown Denver Sheraton, starting at 7 p.m.

Also being honored is Ruth Campbell, an Adams County activist who is receiving the party’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Among those who will speak is former U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, now secretary of the Department of the Interior. The keynote speaker is U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the first woman to be elected governor and senator.
