DELTA, Colo.—Delta County’s largest property taxpayer is nearly caught up on its tax bill.

County Treasurer Jim Ventrello said Friday that Bowie Resources/Bowie Acquisition Group LLC has made two $550,000 payments on back taxes from last year under a repayment plan reached with the county, and he expects the company will be able to make a $450,000 payment due this month.

Ventrello says the coal mining company has been trying to catch up on taxes while also dealing with a slowdown in demand for its product during the recession and geologic problems in its coal mine. Ventrello says the company has cleared up the problem at its mine.

Company officials didn’t return phone calls from The Daily Sentinel seeking comment.
