DENVER—Denver police have arrested a driver suspected of hitting a woman walking near the University of Denver.

Police say 22-year-old Robert Jesse Gallegos was arrested for investigation of allegations of a hit-and-run and drunken driving.

Twenty-four-year-old Lindsey Howland was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash around 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

Gallegos’ 34-year-old sister, Lola Gallegos, was in the car with her brother and told The Denver Post that he returned to the scene. She says her brother was driving her car because she was drunk. She says he performed a sobriety test at a traffic stop less than 30 minutes before the crash, and officers allowed him to drive away.

She says she did not see the crash.
