GUNNISON — Wildlife officers have transferred 62 pronghorn captured on private property near Pueblo to the Gunnison basin to boost the population on Colorado’s Western Slope.
In late February, a low-flying helicopter and about 100 Colorado Division of Wildlife biologists, staff and volunteers rounded up the animals from an area near Pueblo that wildlife officials say is overpopulated with pronghorn.
The animals were placed in horse trailers and were released Feb. 26 about 20 miles southeast of Gunnison where the pronghorn population has suffered. More than half of the estimated 600 pronghorn in the Gunnison basin died during the severe winter of 2007-08.
