A new interactive campus crime map on CU-Boulder’s police website reports that 10 sex offenses occurred on campus between August 2009 and March 2010.

But CU police spokeswoman, Molly Bosley said Monday the information on the map is misleading.

Of the 10 sex offenses reported online, one is a rape case. An array of charges get classified as sex offenses online, including indecent exposure or fondling.

“If you look at the statistics, there were four rape cases in 2009, and seven in 2008. So it’s actually decreasing,” Bosley said.

She also said the misleading number of sex offenses is also a result of multiple charges in any one incident showing up as separate incidents.

“We really are going to have to look at how we present that information online,” Bosley said.

The sole sex offense that is a rape is still being investigated, although student Joshua Newton has been charged in the Feb. 17 case.
