GeoEye Inc. has chosen Lockheed Martin Space Systems to build its next commercial earth-imaging satellite, GeoEye-2.

GeoEye is based in Virginia and has its imagery-production facilities in Thornton.

Some of the work will be done in Colorado. Lockheed officials said they expect the project to be completed with existing employees.

The cost of GeoEye-2 was not disclosed. It could be launched by late 2012.

GeoEye spokesman Mark Brender said it will have the capability to capture images as small as half the size of home plate at Coors Field from more than 400 miles high.
