AURORA, Colo.—The city of Aurora’s new water-purification and -recycling system is on track to be complete ahead of schedule and under budget.
With the Prairie Waters project more than 90 percent complete, Aurora Water spokesman Greg Baker says the final tab should be around $659 million, or about $95 million below earlier estimates.
The facility is scheduled to be fully running by early summer of next year.
Project managers say they saved money through good planning, trimming nonessential features, and because contractors desperate for work submitted low bids to build the system.
Prairie Waters will provide 10,000 acre-feet of water annually, which is 20 percent of the water Aurora uses.
The city raised residential water prices and tap fees and issued $450 million in bonds to pay for the project.
