Customer services at the U.S. Post Office at 280 E. First Ave. in Broomfield have resumed following a power outage that caused the building to be evacuated for about two and a half hours.
Post office spokesman Alex Turner said the power was restored about 12:25 p.m..
Power at the facility went out about 10 a.m.
Simultaneously employees detected a “burned electrical smell” which led to an evacuation and a fire department response.
Investigators identified a problem with the building’s heating system as the cause of the outage. Mechanics have been sent to the post office to repair the heating system, Turner said.
Turner said mail carriers had already left on their routes for the day so home delivery of mail was not affected. However, there was no counter service in the building, and self-service kiosks were shut down.
However, those services resumed early this afternoon, said Turner.
Xcel Energy spokesman Mark Stutz said the outage was reported at 10:19 a.m. An Xcel crew restored power to the post office and three nearby businesses.
