NEW YORK — Consol Energy Inc. will pay $3.48 billion in cash to acquire Dominion Resources Inc.’s Appalachian business that finds and produces oil and gas, continuing to expand beyond coal mining into the booming shale-gas business.
The deal expands Consol’s natural-gas reserves and production capacity in the Marcellus Shale in the Eastern U.S., where output has expanded dramatically in recent years.
