Two cross country skiers survived an avalanche around 1 p.m. but spent more than six hours awaiting rescue on the east side of the Grand Mesa, about 30 miles east of Grand Junction.

Seth Anderson, 35, of Grand Junction suffered leg fractures in the slide, but Ann Driggers, 40, also of Grand Junction, did not appear to have injuries, said Mesa County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Heather Benjamin.

Benjamin said that the skiers used a cell phone to call for help. Search and Rescue crews reached the skiers in the remote area below the Thunderbird Trail near Palisade Point.

Anderson was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction at about 7:30 p.m., Benjamin said.
