The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office and the University of Colorado athletic department have formed a “task force for student-athlete welfare” aimed at repairing frayed relationships following CU’s football recruiting scandal and providing support for the high-profile students.
The group, which includes CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn, DA Stan Garnett and Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner, aims to educate student-athletes about the law and the community and build relationships among leaders.
“We want to sit down and get to know each other so if there’s ever a major issue where law enforcement is involved, we will have those relationships,” Garnett said.
Members of the task force have been and will continue talking with student-athletes about the consequences of their behavior and how law enforcement won’t treat them differently even though they will be held to a higher standard in the community. Garnett said he’s made prosecutors available to meet with student-athletes to discuss sexual behavior and the use of drugs and alcohol.
Task force members also will listen to athletes’ concerns and questions about law enforcement, and they’ll discuss ways to help the students develop good citizenship skills and feel comfortable in Boulder, Garnett said.
