COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs residents can bring a little light to their city by paying to “adopt” streetlights that have been turned off as a cost-saving measure.
City officials say a residential light would cost $75 to adopt for a year, while an arterial light for bigger streets would cost $180.
The first light adopter signed up Thursday.
City officials say they have saved $760,000 by turning off 5,300 streetlights this year. Switching off the lights is a part of a plan to save $1.2 million.
This year, the city expects its sales-tax revenue will be almost $22 million less than it was in 2007.
