DENVER—A dozen retired Denver Water workers say they were told to bury hazardous waste near dozens of homes and schools 20 years ago, and that they have illnesses that they say may be connected to asbestos exposure.
Joe Pacheco told KDVR-TV that a manager ordered him and others to bury cement asbestos and other toxic materials at a water treatment facility in Douglas County.
Asbestos-cement pipe or sheet can emit airborne fibers if the materials are cut or broken.
Denver Water Board President Penfield Tate told KDVR that the board would investigate. Water Board officials said Friday the air and drinking and ground water near the treatment facility are safe and that they have never detected asbestos in the drinking water at the treatment plant.
