DENVER—A Denver woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her 2-year-old son’s scalding death.

Twenty-four-year-old Isela Reyes-Talamantes was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in January to child abuse resulting in death. She originally was charged with first-degree murder, but the charge was dismissed in exchange for her plea.

Prosecutors say Elijah Archuleta died shortly after being taken to a hospital November 2008 with severe burns on 75 percent of his body. They say Reyes-Talamantes and her boyfriend drove around running errands while Elijah suffered in the back seat.

Reyes-Talamantes’ boyfriend, John Vigil, also faces trial for first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in the case.
