FORT COLLINS — Junior T.J. Borcky, who has spent a career shuttling between wide receiver and quarterback, will take the first snap at quarterback Thursday when Colorado State opens spring practice.

Quarterback will be one of the most contested areas for the Rams, much as it has been the last two springs. Last year’s backup, senior Jon Eastman, who started the finale, remains in the competition, but all eyes will be on redshirt freshman Nico Ranieri and early-enrollment freshman Pete Thomas.

“I’d like for T.J., if he’s not our starting quarterback, to be a big part of our offense as a receiver,” CSU coach Steve Fairchild said Monday at his prespring practice news conference. “If we were playing a game tomorrow, he’d mostly be the starter, but we’re not, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Personnel update.

Junior Mike Kawulok, a starter at linebacker last season before blowing out a knee, will be held out of spring. Listed as limited are reserve defensive end Zach Tiedgen (shoulder) and reserve quarterback Klay Kubiak (shoulder). There might be some delay in safety Mike Orakpo’s long-anticipated debut. He is nursing a hamstring. There are many position change experiments, at least to start the spring. Senior tight end Adam Seymore has been moved to defensive tackle. Running back Jonathan Gaye appears on the depth chart at cornerback, and tight end/fullback Broderick Sargent also has moved to the defensive line.
