Unless you were one of the 260 rugged racers who registered Dec. 1, the timing of this weekend’s 40-mile overnight ski slog from Crested Butte to Aspen known as the 13th annual Elk Mountains Grand Traverse normally wouldn’t have any effect on you whatsoever. This time around, though, the kind folks at Mt. Crested Butte are sending out the message that it’s OK to leave the self-inflicted suffering to someone else while you celebrate a good time at the starting line.
The first-ever “Ski Town Breakdown,” featuring the Pete Kilpatrick Band and Colorado favorite Yonder Mountain String Band, is open to all at 3 p.m. Saturday at the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. General admission tickets are priced at $35, or upgrade to the $99 VIP package that includes an exclusive meet-and-greet with the band before the show as well as private food and drink service on the deck of Butte 66.
