GOODYEAR, Ariz. — An optimistic Russell Branyan is eager to take the field in a Cleveland Indians uniform.
Branyan is set to be the designated hitter in a minor-league game today as he deals with a herniated disc in his back. Depending on how he feels after that test, he could play first base on Wednesday. He will open the regular season on the disabled list.
“Russell hit in batting practice and took grounders,” manager Manny Acta said Monday before the Indians played the Los Angeles Dodgers at night. “The plan is for him to play a few games on the minor-league fields this week.”
Signed to a one-year, $2 million contract, the 34-year-old slugger will join Triple-A Columbus on April 8.
“It’s the smartest thing for both parties to continue to rehab and come back with a regimented schedule,” Branyan said. “There’s no sense in being selfish and rushing.”
Yankees’ Teixeira hit on elbow.
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch in a game against the Orioles at Sarasota, Fla.
Teixeira was batting in the second inning against Jeremy Guthrie when hit by a fastball.
Teixeira was examined by New York’s team doctor and an Orioles orthopedist. X-rays were not taken.
Mets’ Reyes back in action.
Jose Reyes is a step closer to appearing in a game for the first time this spring.
The Mets shortstop took batting practice against minor-league pitchers at Port St. Lucie, Fla., and said the session went better than expected.
Reyes has participated in six workouts since returning to camp Wednesday, following a three-week absence with a hyperactive thyroid that prevented him from doing any physical activity.
Strasburg set for first start.
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says right-hander Stephen Strasburg will make his minor- league debut for Double-A Harrisburg against Altoona on April 11. Strasburg was 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in spring training with the major-league club.
