FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Wellington man was sentenced to 18 months in prison in a case that triggered a police standoff that left his father dead six years ago.
Michael Welch Jr. was sentenced Monday in a plea agreement with prosecutors. Welch faced drugs and weapons charges when authorities surrounded his home in 2004 and an armed standoff ensued. A sheriff’s sniper shot and killed Welch’s father, Michael Welch Sr.
Welch later fled with his family to Canada in 2004. He was apprehended in 2006 and has since been in custody in Colorado.
Welch plead guilty this month to violating his bond and being accessory to a crime and prosecutors dropped the more serious drugs and weapons charges.
