DENVER—Safeway has agreed to donate to two schools and two charities to settle a discrimination complaint by a Denver teen.
Brandon Anderson-Thayer claimed he was accused of theft at a Denver Safeway store in 2008 because he is black. He says he was handcuffed and searched, but no stolen goods were found.
Safeway will contribute to South High School, the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance School, the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and Food Bank of the Rockies. Amounts haven’t been released.
Anderson-Thayer’s attorney says his client will withdraw all legal claims.
The Denver Anti-Discrimination Office concluded there was reason to believe Anderson-Thayer’s treatment was racial profiling. Safeway officials have denied the allegations.
Anderson-Thayer was 17 at the time.
