This week, the Colorado Springs Airport is testing a $20 million explosive-detection system for checked baggage, with the equipment expected to be in service Monday.

An automated belt system will move baggage through machines that use CT-scan technology to detect explosive and other potentially hazardous materials. Currently, there is a manual check of each checked bag.

Checked baggage will be screened for about 18 months in the airport’s ticket lobby while construction of the new system is done on the terminal’s lower level.
