Most highways in Colorado’s high country shut down by snow overnight are open again, including Loveland Pass, which reopened early this afternoon.

Portions of I-70 through the mountains were closed in both directions Thursday as multiple traffic accidents clogged the snow-packed highway system.

High winds, with gusts up 45 mph at higher elevations, and snow may continue to hamper travel in the mountains today. Some stretches of the highway remain slushy, icy or wet in spots, but most of the system is dry pavement this afternoon, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Snow showers are expected to continue in parts of the mountains today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service, but new accumulations are expected to be less than 3 inches in most areas.

Vail has a 70 percent chance for snow today – up to 3 inches – and the high temperature there should be about 29 degrees, the weather service reports.
