Getting your player ready...

Who: David Witte, Dylan Powers and Hedy Witte

Where: Seclec Ossuary Church, Kutna Hora (an hour’s train ride from Prague), which contains bones of 40,000-plus plague and war victims, many of them arranged in 1870 to form chapel decorations. Behind us is the Schwarzenberg family crest.

Best meal: U Vladare on Maltezke’, a Czech specialties restaurant near the Lennon Wall in Prague’s Little Quarter.

Best deal: The Prague transit system (trams, subway and buses) is always handy, easy to learn, easy to use and inexpensive. We took it everywhere. There’s no need to have a car or use a taxi.

Best time to go: August-October; it’s not so crowded, and the weather is decent. We were there in late October; chilly but not cold.

Best travel tip: Reserve a guide in advance for part of your first day. In Prague, guides charge by the hour rather than per person, so it’s an inexpensive way to have a personal tour and have questions answered. Before our trip, we communicated via e-mail with Dana Chaloupka (found through guide-prague.cz). In our case she did a marvelous job in customizing the tour to our 12-year- old grandson’s interests and gave us great ideas and directions for future days.
