Where: Summit of Mount Zeus on Naxos Island

Best meal: The Flamingo in Naxos Town. While dining on delicious Greek appetizers, entrees and dessert, we were also treated to live music, traditional dancing, and plenty of ouzo and wine.

Best deal: I went with a hiking tour group (through REI). Hiking is free and a great way to get scenic views of the Greek Islands. We dined family style, which allowed me to taste a wider sampling of Greek food at each than would have been possible while traveling solo.

Best time to go: Late September or early October for cooler temperatures (as in not so hot) and fewer tourists.

Best travel tip: Spend some time in Athens before you head to the islands. Don’t miss the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Bring a headlamp for scrambling up that rocky hill along the water in the pre-sunrise darkness.
