OxyContin painkillers will be replaced on U.S. pharmacy shelves by a formulation designed by Purdue Pharma LP to prevent tampering and abuse.
The Food and Drug Administration cleared the company’s plan to introduce a version of the drug that is more resistant to crushing, chewing or injecting for a quick high, the agency said Monday in a statement. Outside advisers to the FDA supported the changes in a 14-4 vote Sept. 24.
