Todd Helton passed Rockies hitting coach Don Baylor on baseball’s all-time hits list on opening day and added singles in his first three at-bats Tuesday night in Milwaukee. With a smirk, Helton prompted a visitor to ask Baylor about falling behind the first baseman. “My (2,135th) hit was a BB. His was a little flare,” Baylor said proudly.

Streak ends, begins.

Second baseman Clint Barmes ended an 0-for-20 drought dating to last season when he doubled off the center-field wall. But Barmes also committed an error, giving the team gaffes in consecutive games as its fielding remains inconsistent.

Catching a break.

Brewers star Prince Fielder got lucky in the fourth inning on Gregg Zaun’s groundball. He tripped and fell leaving third base — but Troy Tulowitzki didn’t notice, converting the double play instead.
