A tanker rollover this morning will keep Interstate 25 north of the Colorado Springs closed until at least 9 p.m., highway officials said this afternoon.

The long delays followed the traffic accident at about 11 p.m. The truck spilled more than 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel near Baptist Road.

No one was injured in the incident, the cause of which is still under investigation.

The tanker’s driver, Buck Herron, 41, of Clayton, N.M., has been charged with careless driving, said Sgt. John Hahn of the Colorado State Patrol.

“It appears traffic slowed down ahead of him, and in attempt to avoid the slowing traffic swerved and ran off the right side of the road,” he said.

Crews contained the spill, but are still siphoning off about 3,800 gallons of fuel and putting a crane in place to right the tanker truck is taking awhile, said Bob Wilson, a spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The spill isn’t expected to have any effects on the environment, as all creeks are located some distance away, he said.

Detours are set up in both directions: southbound at Baptist Road, exit 158; and northbound at Northgate, exit 156. All traffic is being detoured to Colorado Highway 83.
