ARVADA — Even though Peak to Peak controlled the offensive flow most of the game Wednesday night, it couldn’t find one shot to crack Faith Christian’s defense.
That was until Brynna Bostic had a free kick.
The freshman defender broke up a scoreless game in the 52nd minute, and the Pumas produced their fifth road victory of the girls soccer season, beating Faith Christian 2-0.
Peak to Peak needed one break with an offense that was pushing but not penetrating Faith Christian’s defense far enough, and Bostic got that chance.
“I definitely, whenever I have those, work on them in practice a lot to get them in. So when I have those opportunities (in a game), I try to get them in,” Bostic said. “On that one, I’m just going to the closest upper 90 (degree corner) and just trying to hammer it in as hard as I can.”
She got just enough for the ball to slide off Faith Christian goalkeeper Aubri Swan and into the net.
Peak to Peak (5-2-1) scored an insurance goal, though a delayed one, nine minutes later when Belle Morel was credited with a tally that ricocheted off an official. The goal was initially disallowed.
The Pumas have five shutout victories this season, all coming on the road. But there’s room for improvement.
“What we pride ourselves in is possession of the ball under pressure, but I think we’re a little short in developing offensive opportunities to get goals,” said Peak to Peak coach Peter Chandler.
Faith Christian didn’t seem to get into an offensive rhythm until the final 10 minutes, yet the Eagles (2-3) had the better scoring chances during the first half. First, midfielder Shelby Ward jaunted in with a shot that sailed just left of the goal. Then 38 seconds later, Jemma Wilkie had a similar shot from 8 yards out, but Pumas goalkeeper Corey Johnson preserved the shutout.
“We did have a difficult time penetrating. Their goalkeeper comes out very deep and very fast, and we haven’t seen a lot of that so far, so we have to adjust to that, but we’ll get on our feet,” said Faith Christian coach Amber Jenkins.
