WASHINGTON — The U.S.-led military command in Afghanistan said Thursday that it is opening a new investigation into a botched raid Feb. 12 by U.S. special-operations forces, and a senior commander apologized for the deaths of five civilians, including two pregnant women.

Defense officials disputed claims that U.S. forces covered up evidence of the attack.

Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top military commander in Afghanistan, ordered the investigation after differences emerged between the initial U.S. inquiry, which remains classified, and an investigation by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior.
