GUNNISON, Colo.—The Colorado Division of Wildlife is taking more steps to shore up the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep herd north of Gunnison.
Wildlife biologists are exploring whether to move sheep into the Taylor River area, where herd numbers have dwindled in recent years because of disease.
In March, three pregnant ewes were moved from the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range in southeastern Colorado. They were treated with antibiotics and vaccines in hopes of preventing infections that have plagued the Taylor River herd. Wildlife officials say they want to see if the transplanted ewes and their lambs survive into the fall before deciding whether augmenting the herd can help it recover.
